Gathering

There is a theme of love being shown throughout today’s readings in different ways and you could begin with songs which speak of the love of God such as New every morning is your love (CH 214 / MP 480), Great God, your love has called us here (CH 484), I could sing of Your love forever (CCLI) and Hallelujah / Your love is amazing (MP 1143 / CCLI). Some lesser well known options worth considering are God is love: let heaven adore him (CH 123) and I will sing a song of love (GWA 148 / WGRG) which are both wonderfully lively and energetic.

Word

Commit your way to God the Lord (Jubilate / PFAS 37A) is good option for a metrical version of the psalm and can be sung to well known tunes such as ROCKINGHAM or O WALY WALY while The day of the Lord (Kimbrough) offers a more contemporary musical style. Wait for the Lord (CH 276 / PFAS 37B / Taizé) or Be still and know that I am God (CH 755) could both be used as a responsorial chant as they can link to v7.

Response

The Gospel focuses on love of enemies and Lord, make us servants of your peace (CH 527) and Make me a channel of your peace (CH 528 / MP 456) would be well known options here which are both based on the Prayer of St Francis. Help us accept each other (Hope) is a good option can be sung to a variety of tunes but AURELIA is probably the best known to which it is commonly sung. Other songs which can pick up this broad theme include Love is patient, love is kind (Love goes on) (GWA 39 / OCP), Help us forgive, forgiving Lord (CH 693) and We are one in the Father’s love (CCLI).

Now the green blade riseth (CH 417) and Unless a single grain of wheat (CH 347) would link to the metaphor in the Gospel of wheat or grain. This passage follows on from last week and you could also consider many of the same Easter songs such as The Saviour died, but rose again (CH 425), Christ is alive! Let Christians sing (CH 416), Christ has risen while earth slumbers (CH 430), We know that Christ is raised and dies no more (CH 635) and Christ was raised (Resound). There are also some great short songs such as The Lord is risen from the dead (CH 797) and Jesus the Lord, has risen / Surrexit Dominus vere (CH 794) which are both simple rounds.

For the Old Testament reading you might want to consider a few songs that are about the general story of Joseph such as Joseph was his father’s favourite (Carolyn), Joseph, who are these strange men (GIA) or When prison walls extend their reach (Jubilate). For this specific part of the story, songs which speak about reconciliation would also be appropriate such as Ososo / Come now O prince of peace (CH 275), When the bonds of love are breaking (CH 690), Christ our peace (GWA 219 / GIA) or Oh how good it is (GWA 199 / CCLI / Getty).

Sending

There is a strong theme of reconciliation and unity through the readings and this would be a great theme to end on with options for songs in a wide range of styles including We sing a love that sets all people free (CH 622), Miren qué bueno / How good it is when God’s will is done (CH 90), When hands reach out beyond divides (GWA 218 / MV 169), Jesus puts this song into our hearts (CH 692 / MP 376), We are one in the Father’s love (CCLI) and Oh how good it is (GWA 199 / CCLI / Getty)
